According to the National Park Service, Yosemite National Park is nearly 95 percent designated wilderness. The park’s 747,956 acres (or 1,169 square miles) are home to hundreds of wildlife species and thousands of Yosemite plants. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is known for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves and biological diversity. There are 800 miles of hiking trails and 282 miles of road in Yosemite.
Yosemite can be translated as "among them are killers" but it is a mistranslation of an American Indian word used to describe the Ahwahneechee people who lived there 4000 years before Europeans arrived. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill giving Yosemite Valley to the State of California. World famous conservationist John Muir petitioned for the creation of Yosemite National Park in 1890.
If you arrive at the Tower Tours office before your tour, be sure to walk across the street to the waterfont where you will find excellent views of sailboats, sea lions and swimmers.
