Kathy Griffin Wows Audience on Carnival Cruise Ship
Carnival LIVE hosts Kathy Griffin comedy
By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong
Grammy and Emmy award winning comedy headliner and Anderson Cooper pal Kathy Griffin entertained a new audience demographic in February 2016 - cruise ship passengers. And she loved every minute!
Griffin brought her unique brand of comedy and celebrity shaming storytelling aboard the Carnival Breeze while it was docked in Cozumel, Mexico on February 25, 2016. Her show was part of the Carnival LIVE entertainment concept which brings big name acts aboard Carnival cruise ships.
She pulled no punches in the Carnival LIVE show we attended. But then...she never does. That's what we love about Kathy after all.
Here are a few examples:
About parents who brought children: "If you brought your f#@&ing kids, get out!"
About the show: "You are getting a Carnegie Hall show on a boat."
About Donald Trump: "Trump. I know him. He's a moron. That is a documented fact," and "Donald is finally showing his true colors...and I don't mean orange."
About Hillary Clinton: "I am an equal opportunity offender. I love Hillary. I hope that dyke gets in."
About gay men: "I have known I was a gay man since I was seven."
About straight men: "I have done two Seinfelds. That's how straight men know me."
About her 95 year old mother: "My Mom actually thinks Judge Judy is the new Supreme Court Justice."
About celebrities: "One time, Quentin Tarantino, George Clooney and I were prank calling people," and "I brought a text from Cher. I'm from Illionois. It is crazy that I know Cher."
Svelte Griffin looked great on-stage dressed in black with her lion's mane of red hair. She doesn't really tell jokes. She weaves long and semi-focused tales of celebrity encounters, personal observations and social commentary that just draws her audience in waiting for the punch line.
We met with Griffin prior to her show and exchanged emails afterward. We asked Kathy Griffin two questions. Here's what she told us.
You never seem to get older. What's your secret?
"Being a gay man, I understand it is my duty to stay fit. It is mandatory for me to keep my status in the LGBTQI2 community. I realize I have the option of becoming a bear, but I like to think of myself as a middle-aged boy toy. As far as my actual workout regimen, believe it or not, it's pretty old-fashioned. I walk, or hike, every day, whether I'm on the road or at home. And I actually do watch my diet. I watch it go back and forth from a healthy salad to a pint of ice cream. It's kind of like my act: some humor that is good for you, and some humor that is purely decadent."
The Carnival association probably brought you in front of a somewhat different audience make-up. What's the best thing about those Carnival LIVE shows and about reaching new people with your amazing comedy?
"Obviously you're referring to the heterosexual community. I know that because you used the word 'different,' and since this publication is called Gay Travelers Magazine, it is probably not being handed out at Donald Trump rallies. Although admit it, Melania's hair and makeup is on point. There you go. I've just done it. Doing the Carnival cruise was great, because there are so many things that are funny to, as you would say, a 'different' audience make-up. And we will get to the Kardashians the next time I see you at sea or on land."
More than 800 Carnival Breeze cruise ship passengers gladly purchased tickets to Kathy Griffin's Carnival LIVE appearance. From the amount of laughter we heard that night, they were very happy that they did.
