Venice, Italy is world famous for its artistic and architectural accomplishments and for its impressive history as a world trading power for many centuries. Venice is on many people's Bucket Lists for good reason - there is no other place quite like Venice.
For travelers wishing to visit Venice but that want to avoid the big crowds and maintain a reasonable budget, the Best Western Hotel Bologna in nearby Mestre is the perfect choice. As a matter of fact, they like to call their location “Venice At Hand!”
Wanting to experience “Venice At Hand,” we booked a suite in the Best Western Hotel Bologna for our 4 day VeniceVenice gondoliers photo by Steven Skelleyadventure.
The Best Western Hotel Bologna has 109 rooms designed in two different styles. There are 77 “Avant” and 32 “Look” rooms. Both the styles are described as “contemporary and friendly design.”
We found our suite to be comfortable and efficient. The heated towel racks were a nice touch and bathroom included both a shower and a separate bathtub. After a long day of wandering the streets of Venice, stretching out in a hot tub for a soak is a wonderful asset.
Breakfast at the hotel is also a very positive experience. This is not your standard bare-bones Continental Breakfast served at so many establishments these days. Guests here enjoy a full buffet breakfast in the dining room each morning. With such an international tourist clientele, the Best Western Hotel Bologna offers a breakfast buffet with an extremely large amount of choices - from fruits, juices, coffees, eggs, sausage, cereals, pastries to yogurts and even salads!
The Da Tura Restaurant at the Hotel Bologna has been a local favorite and the site of local wedding dinners for a century. The restaurant specializes in Pasta e Fagioli, Alla Veneziana and Risotto Radicchio Trevisana.
Marina Furlan, Sales Manager at Best Western Hotel Bologna, told us that the hotel’s reputation for spoiling guests has become so ingrained in the local community that local parents respond to their children’s demands with, “Where do you think we are, at the Best Western Hotel Bologna?”
The Best Western Hotel Bologna in Mestre opened more than 100 years ago in 1911. The Tura family who were the original owners continue to manage the hotel today. In a bit of wonderful historic trivia, the hotel was initially built with the goal of creating a place for travelers to change horses on their journey to Venice and beyond.
Mestre (meh STRAY) is now just a 7 to 8 minute train ride into Venice. Four one-way train tickets cost us less than 5 Euros total so we did not have to deal with parking or traffic issues at all. The seats on the train from Mestre to Venice are comfortable and clean. Tickets can be purchased at the station or very conveniently in the Hotel Bologna at front desk. The hotel is literally just across the street from the train station.
When heading in to Venice for the day, remember to pick up a map of Venice before you board the train. There are free Venice Tourist Maps in the Hotel Bologna lobby near the complimentary computer stations. If you wait until you get into Venice to look for a map, you will have to pay around 3 to 5 Euros for a map and most vendors will not accept a credit card.
